Short: Disk for grabbing & saving Kickstart ROM Author: Roger Håseth Uploader: panterhz yahoo no (Roger Håseth) Type: util/misc Version: 1.1 Architecture: m68k-amigaos >= 1.2.0 This disk can be used for grabbing the Kickstart ROM from Amigas with KS 1.2 or higher. All you have to do is to boot your Amiga with the disk, and then press the Return key when asked to. Now an attempt to grab and save the kick- start to Ram disk will be made, and if this is successful, the ks file will then be copied over to the boot disk. But if this fails, you will be asked to press Return again, which makes an attempt to grab and save kickstart _directly_ to the floppy disk instead. Depending on what you want use the grabbed kickstart for, it is worth to have in mind that in most cases a 100% clean unpatched kickstart is required. One example is if you want to use it with (Win)UAE, another is for using it with softkicking tools like SKick. This is why it's important that you cold-boot the disk, and if you already have turned your Amiga on, turn it off and wait a while before turning it on again. Then you can boot the disk. The kickstart file will be saved to the Kickstart drawer of the boot disk, where it gets a name that starts with "kick" and ends with a 5 digit number, which represents the version + revision number. "kick37175" for example, means kickstart 37.175. Before saving, the Kickstart drawer will be cleared to make sure that there's enough space for the new ks file. Please note! As mentioned further above, the boot disk will try to grab & save the kickstart to the Ram disk, and then copy it to the floppy. This is because it's the safest way of doing it (imho). But have in mind that this requires an Amiga with minimum 1 MB RAM for KS 1.2/1.3, and 1.5 MB RAM for KS 2.0/3.0/3.1. The software used for grabbing the kickstart is GrabKick by Dirk Stoecker. For more info, please read the documentation that's included in the GrabKick dir found on the disk. Or just check out util/misc/GrabKick.lha on Aminet. Changes to version 1.1: * KS file will no longer be saved under the name Kickstart.rom * It will also be saved into a Kickstart drawer on the disk now * No longer any auto-grab, user must confirm first * Added alternative "direct to disk" grab method For information about other stuff I have created, check out my websites at: www.rhz1.com www.amiga911maker.site11.com
